The Nineties Are Back In Style
Style always comes back around. Some of the best fashions are recycled from twenty-some years ago. Take leggings for example. My mother walked into a Forever 21 with me when leggings first came back into style, and said something along the lines of, “That mannequin is wearing exactly something like I would have thirty years ago!” Currently, the nineties are more in fashion than ever, and I for one could not be happier about it.
Celebrities such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera popularized the crop top in the early nineties, but style icons such as Rihanna, Emma Watson, and Miley Cyrus have been bringing the trend back this season. American Apparel has a selection of classic crop tops, but you can find them in styles from bohemian to sports-friendly. Now is the perfect time to snag one for your summer wardrobe!
Need I say more? A whole new generation of teenagers has been devouring this iconic series ever since its Netflix debut in January. I can’t blame them. We all need a little more Joey in our lives if you ask me. Not only is this show being re-popularized, but people of all ages have the opportunity to obsess over Rachel Green’s wardrobe once again.
We wore them in elementary school, and now that most of us are in our mid-twenties we are reclaiming that love – albeit with slightly fewer Winnie the Pooh iron on patches. The old standbys like Dickies and Duluth are still selling them, but these days you can find them everywhere. Hollister, Forever 21, Citizens of Humanity, and Free People, just to name a few. Seriously, Free People is selling them.
With gas still under $2.00 in some areas, many of us are seeing cheaper prices than ever before. It’s been five years since we saw prices around the two-dollar mark, but longer since we saw a price like $1.63. That was seen in Missouri in January this past year. Though I won’t pretend to understand the politics behind this miracle, I definitely have been reaping the benefits. Road trip anyone?
Your parent’s most cringe-worthy accessory is now a party essential across college campuses. Sporting events, concerts, and parties are all places the fanny pack has been showing off its new and improved look. Quality companies like Patagonia, Vera Bradley, and American Apparel all have new designs, and that’s not even mentioning the designs that can be seen at sororities across the nation. Most importantly, Matthew McConnaughy has a beaut of a leather fanny pack. Alright, alright, alright.
What’s in style constantly changes, but in a more cyclical pattern than most of us realize. So wear that floral dress your mom is about to give away. Snag the sunglasses your grandparents want to throw out. Keep those Cosby-esque sweaters everyone else cringes at. Don’t allow what’s in style now to completely govern your clothing choices. You never know when those high-shouldered blouses will come back in fashion.
